DBQ helpful hints

 

 

1.        This is a historical essay.  It must be written in past tense.

2.       Make sure thesis reads clearly.

3.       Underline thesis.

4.      Make sure the thesis addresses the question.

5.       Don’t write the whole essay in the opening paragraph.

6.      Use every single document.

7.      Make sure you have grouped the documents into three categories, which address the question.

8.      Identify the document with brackets after you have discussed it.

9.      Avoid identifying the document by document number.  (Instead use the author’s name, the name of the map, etc.).

10.    Always identify at least two additional sources in the BODY of the essay.  Don’t put them in the conclusion paragraph.

11.     In your groupings, address the documents in chronological order.

12.    Remember POV you are trying to figure out where this person is coming from (why would this person write this). 

a.       Background

b.      Religion

c.       Sex

d.      Class

e.       Political beliefs

13.     Try to avoid using the term “POV” if possible

14.    Make sure you have at least three POV’s / Biases.

15.    You are encouraged to do at least one POV.  If, however, you find POV’s difficult do three biases.

16.    Be sure to label Point of View (with POV) or Bias (with B)

17.    Try to keep essay between 2 ½ and 3 pages.  No more than 3.

18.    Be sure to time yourself.  When did you start, when did you finish?
